President Joseph R. Biden will appoint CFTC Commissioner Rostin Behnam as the new CFTC President. He also appointed new candidates for CFTC and FTC commissioner positions.
In a White House press release, President Biden named the following candidates:
- For CFTC Commissioner – Kristin Johnson. Ms. Johnson is currently a professor of law at the Emory School of Law, where she focuses on financial market risk management and the regulation of complex financial products, securities and derivatives. Previously, Ms. Johnson was an attorney at a New York City law firm.
- For CFTC Commissioner – Christy Goldsmith Romero. Ms. Romero is currently the Special Inspector General for the Distressed Assets Relief Program, and spearheads are conducting investigations and audits of federal financial crisis programs. Previously, Ms. Romero taught securities and cryptocurrency regulation courses at Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Virginia Law School.
- For the FTC Commissioner – Alvaro Bedoya. Mr. Bedoya is currently visiting professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center, where he founded and directs the Center on Privacy and Technology. Dr. Bedoya’s research on protecting consumer privacy has contributed to (i) the passage of federal legislation restricting and regulating the use of facial recognition technologies and (ii) a campaign to push a large Internet business to stop posting payday loan ads in response to some consumer research. .
