California’s moratorium on evictions expires Thursday, September 30, and as time is running out, the City of Fresno and community organizations are teaming up to help Fresno County residents get the rent assistance they need. .
On Saturday, a right to housing workshop will take place with the Central Valley People’s Housing Coalition and local lawyers helping residents apply for rent assistance and information on housing rights.
100% rent relief available
After receiving $ 35 million in emergency rent assistance from the federal and state governments, the city launched the Emergency Rent Assistance Program in March. The goal: to provide 100% debt relief to eligible tenants and landlords.
Earlier this month, the city also voted to distribute an additional $ 5.2 million to the six CBOs: Read and beyond, the Jakara Movement, Centro la Familia, The Fresno Center, West Fresno Family Resource Center, and the Foundation for Education and Leadership.
With the PIU, those who earn less than 80% of the median income, were negatively affected by COVID-19 and could not pay the full amount of their rent and utilities from April 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021, are eligible for funding.

Challenges in distributing ERAP funding
Fresno County Public Information Officer Sonja Dosti said there had been some confusion among residents about filling out requests.
“What I understand is that some people are applying for the city, and they don’t realize that maybe they are supposed to be asking for help from the county,” Dosti said.
Likewise, Dosti says some people are asking the county for help when they should be asking for rent assistance from the city of Fresno.
She says the county distributed about 70% of the rental assistance funds to county residents who applied.
Meanwhile, the city of Fresno as of September 2 according to The Fresno Bee, had distributed approximately $ 4.1 million to 773 candidates.
Last call for rental assistance advice
With eviction protections set to expire at the end of the month, other community organizations have stepped up to help tenants and landlords complete requests for rent relief.
Among these organizations, Faith in the valley, California Power, Fresno Barrio Unidos, Jakara Movement, Strong for tomorrow, and Leadership advice for justice and accountability will host a “Know Your Rights” workshop on Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the workshop will have interpreters available for Hmong, Punjabi and Spanish speakers. The workshop will help tenants apply for rent relief, provide information on what to do if you are at risk of being evicted, and host a question-and-answer session with housing attorneys for those who may have concerns. legal issues.

Deportation changes after September 30
In preparation for the in-person workshop, the Leadership Council hosted Zoom Online meetings for those interested in learning more about legal housing issues, evictions and funding for the PIU.
Jamie Katz, a lawyer at the LCJA, says the law is complicated, especially when it comes to housing rights and tenants’ rights.
“The law is unfair and is written in a way that favors landlords,” Katz said when hosting a housing rights meeting on Zoom.
Having an eviction on your records can have significant consequences. And, after these eviction protections end, tenants will only have 15 days after the end of the eviction moratorium on September 30 to apply for an ERAP if they have received an eviction notice for non- eviction. rent payment.
Currently, tenants who return a return and pay 25% of the rent they owed between September 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021, cannot be evicted by their landlords for not paying 75% of that rent.
From October 1, 2021 to March 1, 2021, landlords will only be able to pursue eviction proceedings if they can prove that they or the tenant have applied for rental assistance and have been refused.
As for late rent notice, instead of 15 day notice, the system reverts to three day notice.
